Felix Riebl needs no introduction. He is the co-founder, band leader and principal songwriter of the internationally acclaimed band The Cat Empire, who have made multi-platinum albums and are the 2006 winner of the World Music Aria Award for their album Cities. He will share the stage with Out to Lunch Presents Etson, which is producer David Levy’s new electronic-world music album with East Timorese artist Etson Caminha.
Levy had been traveling internationally to collaborate with musicians living in refugee camps and post-conflict countries for his last project, The World United in Song (PeaceTones), when he met Etson. Felix Riebl and Out to Lunch’s infectious grooves will be sure to hit the mind and feet.
The show will be supported by the Balinese gamelan ensemble Gamelan DanAnda, a Balinese gamelan percussion orchestra based in Darebin, Naarm. They mostly perform in the traditional Gong Kebyar style, which features shimmering cascades of metallic sound, virtuosic rhythms and breathtaking crescendos. Recently they have been taking this music to new spaces and audiences with collaborations with Oz hip hop legend Joelistics, Balinese-Australian neo-soul singer/producer Komang, and electro-jazz-fusion band Firetail.
